Once waste, now a vibrant community destination
This is a WastePlant.
A WASTE FACILITY THAT GROWS FOOD. A ConceptUAL DESIGN.
A WastePlant Facility is a large-scale community hub that turns food waste into fertile soil, grows nutrient-rich produce, and connects and educates people.
Intelligently designed to be a completely off-grid, modular and scalable facility, WastePlant is suitable for permanent and non-permanent land tenure.
How does WastePlant work?
A Wasteplant that produces food
WastePlant receives food and green waste from businesses and donors locally, then processes and composts the waste on-site using vermiculture (worm and microbe composting)—the way nature does it!
Processing food waste in this way means we’re adding high levels of nutrient directly to the soil, building soil fertility, and supporting the growth of organic herbs, vegetables and greens at the same time.
It’s a local, closed-loop food system.
As well as being a functioning waste facility, WastePlant is a hub for soil education, employment, and laboratory for testing, measuring and improving industry systems for food waste management and food production.
WastePlant operates under a for-profit social enterprise model, whereby a significant portion of profits return to fund future developments and research—supporting our overall mission to elevate soil education, repair food waste systems and create wholesome, local food supply intelligently and locally.
